Nasir Jones (born September 14, 1973), better known by his stage name Nas, formerly Nasty Nas, is an American rapper. The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas is well known for his 1994 debut album Illmatic. This album established Nas as one of hip-hop's most profound lyricists, introducing his alleged signature poetic style.
He has since then been regarded as one of hip-hop's greatest MCs. Raised in the notorious Queensbridge housing projects in New York City, he represents a continuation of a hip-hop tradition in Queensbridge that has spanned through early hip-hop, including the Juice Crew and Mobb Deep.
In 1994, Nas's debut album, Illmatic was finally released. Critically acclaimed and widely regarded as one of the best hip-hop albums of all time, receiving a Five Mics award in The Source magazine. Illmatic featured lyrics that portrayed stunning visual imagery.
On October 12th, 2007, Nas announced that his new album would be called Nigger. Civil rights activists, such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and media outlet Fox News were outraged, expressing stern disapproval. It wasn't until May 19th, 2008, that it was confirmed that Nas changed the name of the album from Nigger to, simply, Untitled.
