Some Nights is the second studio album from American indie pop band fun. It was released on February 21, 2012 through Fueled by Ramen. It was recorded in 2011 and produced by Jeff Bhasker. After signing to a new label, the band began to work on Some Nights over nine months throughout 2011. fun. was influenced by Kanye West and hip-hop throughout the recording process, and West's co-producer Bhasker brought a new element to the trio's sound, creating a mix of indie pop, theatric rock, and hip-hop. According to Ruess, the title was inspired by the inconsistencies in one's personality from night to night.
"We Are Young" was released as the lead single from the album and bolstered the band to mainstream success. The album has received mixed to positive reviews according to Metacritic.
Some Nights has received generally positive reviews. On the review aggregate site Metacritic, the album has a score of 66 out of 100, indicating "Generally favorable reviews."
Ray Rahman of Entertainment Weekly was less glowing, criticizing the album's second half as being inferior to the first. Sputnikmusic staff reviewer Adam Knott gave the album a 4/5 and wrote, "The energy and personality which flood out of every melody give this album its own stamp of authority. It tips over into excess at rare moments, but even as you can hear those moments happening, they provoke grins inside and out." Consequence of Sound panned the album, giving it a one-star rating and stating "Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, and Andrew Dost now put forth mediocrity so vainly sterile, the most daring things going for them are their album cover and their one-liner band name."
